Feeding Your Pet the Right Protein: Expert Tips & Insights from Nancy Hierl of Ruff Town Rescue

As pet food enthusiasts and dog lovers, we all wish the best for our pets. Nutrition is an important aspect of your dog's overall health — and protein is one of the most vital nutrients in your pet's life. But how much protein do dogs need? Is there really such a thing as too much? And how can you ensure dog owners are making the best choice in food or treats?

We spoke with Nancy Hierl, CEO and Founder of Ruff Town Rescue, who’s on a mission to provide dogs with wholesome, nutritious meals and all-natural dog treats through her brand Ruff Town Treats. With a passion for rescue dogs and experience in canine nutrition, Nancy offers valuable insights into the world of natural pet food and the real impact of high-protein dog diets.

Why Protein Matters for Dogs

Protein is the foundation of a dog's body," says Nancy Hierl. "From healthy skin and coat to robust muscles and immune system — it all begins with protein.

Dogs require protein-rich diets to support lean muscle, heal tissues, and create essential enzymes and hormones. In contrast to carbohydrates, which tend to serve as fillers in most commercial pet foods, protein directly contributes positively to your dog's health.

At Ruff Town Treats, all products are designed with a single-ingredient philosophy — focusing on pure, clean, and biologically appropriate ingredients like chicken breast, beef heart, and silver carp

“We don’t believe in fillers, preservatives, or artificial flavors,” explains Nancy. “Only real meat, as nature intended.”

How Much Protein Do Dogs Actually Need?

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) suggests a minimum of 18% protein for adult dog maintenance and 22.5% for developing puppies. But, as Nancy Hierl points out, these are only the bare minimum.

"Give dogs the freedom to decide their own diet, and research indicates that they will eat up to 44% protein and 52% fat, which is consistent with the wild canine's natural feeding habits," Nancy reports.

"That tells us a great deal about what's naturally healthy for them.

"This is why natural dog treats from Ruff Town Treats offer a higher protein content without the unnecessary additives. Each product is crafted to support your dog’s health — naturally and deliciously.

The Truth About Carbs in Dog Food

Even though most kibble brands claim carbohydrates are not necessary in the canine diet. Many dry dog foods actually contain a content of 70% carbs in the disguise of grains, corn, and potatoes.

"These carbs are inexpensive fillers," Nancy says. "They might make your dog feel full, but they don't add much nutritionally. Worse, they can cause weight gain, digestive upset, and long-term health issues."

Rather, Nancy Hierl and the team at Ruff Town Treats prefer grain-free, gluten-free, and antibiotic-free ingredients. Be it their top-selling Chicken Breast Treats or their high-nutrient Beef Heart bites, each choice is meant to feed — not simply fill — your dog.

Understanding the Right Protein Levels

So how do you know what percentage of protein is appropriate for your dog?

For ill dogs or active ones, high-protein foods are a must. "You should try to find dog food or treats that contain at least 30% protein on a dry matter basis," advises Nancy. "The more actual meat, the better. Steer clear of anything where grains or by-products are the first ingredient."

To calculate dry matter protein content:

  • Subtract moisture from 100% (e.g. 100% - 70% water = 30% dry matter).
  • Divide the protein percentage by the dry matter amount.
  • Multiply by 100 to get the true protein content.

For example, a wet dog food labeled with 15% protein and 70% moisture translates to 50% protein on a dry matter basis.

“At Ruff Town Treats, we take this science seriously,” Nancy says. “We want pet parents to understand what they’re feeding their dogs — because knowledge is power.”

Can Dogs Get Too Much Protein?

Contrary to popular myths, excess protein is not harmful to healthy dogs.

"There's an old wives' tale that high protein can hurt your dog's kidneys," says Nancy. "But research has found that even extremely high-protein diets have no adverse effects on kidney function in healthy dogs."

Actually, it would take more than 80% protein in a diet to possibly lead to an imbalance — and not one commercially available dog food approaches that figure. The genuine risk comes from low-quality proteins or too much carb, not from natural, high-protein matter.

Choosing the Right Dog Food & Pet Treats

Shopping for healthy dog food or natural pet treats can be overwhelming. Packaging can be misleading, and not all ingredients are created equal.

Here’s what Nancy Hierl recommends looking for:

Single-ingredient treats – like 100% chicken breast or beef heart.
No fillers – skip products with corn, soy, or by-products.
No artificial preservatives – always go for clean and fresh.
Grain-free and gluten-free – especially for dogs with sensitivities.
High protein & low carbohydrate – to match your dog’s natural diet.

Ruff Town Treats ticks all these boxes, offering a range of premium, all-natural dog treats that are both delicious and nutritionally sound.

          Final Thoughts: Protein First, Always

The takeaway? Protein is not optional — it’s essential.
